In collaboration with a community of innovators who have been perfecting this millenary technique, Industry of All Nations presents the world's first collection of naturally dyed, hand-loomed selvedge jeans from 100% organic denim. Our dye house, located in Southeast India, employs a natural process that eliminates the use of petrochemicals offering no contamination to the soil and waterways.
Furthermore, our manufacturing process aims at providing the men and women of this area with local employment and opportunities to further the cultural progress of looming and dying. We are determined to support the efforts of these communities to keep their traditions alive and prevent the need for relocation or vocational displacement.Material: petrochemical free 100% Organic Cotton Colouring: petrochemical free NO HEAVY METAL DYES - NO CHEMICAL WASHES. Years of research have allowed us to naturally affix these natural dyes to the fabric, resulting in 100% naturally dyed denim which does not bleed any more than your regular pair of jeans. Men performing one of the steps of the ancient process of extracting indigo dye from the Indigoferia Tinctoria plant. Here they are stirring the indoxyl-rich mixture to mix it with air. This allows the air to oxidize the indigo plants, which settles to the bottom of the tank.
Hand looming: electricity free The millenary practice of looming by hand is deeply rooted in Indian culture. There are approximately 1 million hand looms working in India today but it is the first time denim is loomed this way. By introducing new designs with a modern demand we are helping to promote this social technique keeping the tradition alive. Our looming shops also reside in towns and villages in the Southeast Indian region of Tamil Nadu, where groups of men and women fashion the IOAN selvedge denim fabric rolls. Their tradition and expertise account for the quality of this robust yet soft denim. The word "selvedge" comes from the phrase "self-edge"—the natural edge of a roll of fabric. Originally selvedge denim was always hand-loomed, a practice continued in the production of IOAN jeans.
Looms weave fabric with one continuous thread (the weft) that is passed back and forth all the way down the length of the bolt. As the weft loops back into the edge of the denim, it creates this "self-edge" or selvedge. This is desirable because the edge cannot fray like denim made on a projectile loom with separate wefts which leave an open edge that must be stitched.
Hand looms weave a narrow roll of fabric (32" or 83 cm.) IOAN is maximizing its use by accommodating a pattern that loses as little "middle" fabric as possible. For this reason our selvedge edges are only visible on the front part of the jeans.
